It’s almost surprising that it took until now for Dwight to be pushed to his breaking point on The Walking Dead. After serving as a “Yes” Man for Saviors leader Negan for an unthinkable amount of time under horrible circumstances, the character finally told the man a lie when his ex-wife Sherry hightailed it out of Savior-town.

Sherry, like a few characters on The Walking Dead, is missing in action. Maybe she is living happily ever after with the likes of Morales from Season 1 and Heath who disappeared earlier in Season 7, or maybe she got eaten by zombies. Either way, Dwight actor Austin Amelio insists his character believes her to be alive.

As for whether or not we will ever see Sherry on The Walking Dead again, Amelio is optimistic. Speaking to ComicBook.com ahead of the series’ panel at PaleyFest over the weekend, Amelio shared whether or not she will pop up on the show again.

“I hope so, for Dwight’s sanity,” Amelio said. “I hope so. If she’s gone, that sucks. I’m out of the Sanctuary.”

Out of the Sanctuary? Well, that’s exactly what comic book fans are expecting and writer Robert Kirkman seemed to be teasing during the panel when he shouted, “Read the comics!” at a fan who asked if there will be redemption for Dwight.

That path to redemption might be a long, dark one, though. “He’s a lone soldier at this point,” Amelio told ComicBook.com. “I think he’s just making smart chess moves in order to fulfill the bigger picture of what he wants to do.”

As for which version of the clearly complex character is the most fun for Amelio: he prefers a challenge. “The emotional, torn character is always fun to play with, especially as an actor,” Amelio said.
