In a flashback, Ofelia walks through the desert alone. She follows a fence with a gallon of water in her hand. She eventually comes to a hole and ventures through it. Steps later, gun shots ring out and force her to hide behind a tree. She readies herself for an attack but Jeremiah Otto stops her with a gun drawn. He takes the gun and welcomes her to America.

Not far, he pushes her to the ground in front of his truck. She says she is heading to Santa Fe to find her fiance. Jeremiah gives her water and tells her she is free to go. She asks for a ride but he says there is no use for “brown people” on the ranch. She spits at his feet before he leaves.

Ofelia journeys through the desert and searches for a way to protect herself from the sun. She imagines Daniel speaking to her, insisting she stay awake.

Later, she is found by Walker. She is burnt and dehydrated. He gives her water and helps her onto his horse. She lays on it, covered by his jacket, as he guides the horse to his community on foot.

At the Black Hat Motel, Walker rides in with Ofelia. He sees how badly she has been burnt and helps her into a bath tub. Later, he offers her food and introduces himself as Cala Taaka, before turning down a bed for her to sleep in.

Now, back the ranch, Madison continues her chase after Ofelia. Ofelia, however, gets into a truck and finds the keys. Madison catches up, though, and busts the window She starts beating Ofelia and questioning, “What did you do?”

The next ay, Troy and others load bodies into a truck. Alicia and others help manage the infirmary. Nick is very sick. Jeremiah enters and sees someone reanimating beside Nick. He puts him down with his gun. Everyone looks on. Madison reveals that Ofelia put powder in the coffee. Madison orders Jake to give Nick antibiotics.

Moments later, Ofelia is driving to Walker with Madison holding a gun to her head. Madison is disgusted with her. Ofelia says “the nation’s my family now.”

Madison holds Ofelia at gunpoint, insisting, “I want to talk to Walker!” Madison questions what the poison was. She doesn’t care about the Otto family or dying. She wants to know what is killing her son. “Anthrax,” Walker said. “There’s no cure.” Madison feels defeated. “This woman is more of a man than Jake Otto or any of his relatives,” Walker orders to his people before asking how old her son is. Upon learning he is 19, he says, “If he’s strong he’ll live,” before saying that she should abandon the ranch. She won’t run anymore.

Elsewhere, Strand has gathered a backpack full of supplies and is dodging walker threats. In the distance, he sees the Abigail yacht, still afloat. He is ecstatic to see it, quickly going out to it across the water. Once aboard, he finds multiple dead officers, so he backs away slowly to look for a weapon. The best he has is a harpoon gun and knife. He kills one walker then an officer and uses his gun to take out the rest.ย

Nick wakes up at Broke Jaw Ranch, spewing more fluids from his mouth. Madison enters to tell Jake that it’s anthrax. Troy is happy to know what they’re doing with. Madison tries to help Troy’s plans and Jake cuts her off, “You don’t lead this ranch!” They storm out and Madison stays behind to talk with Nick.ย

Jake sits alone, approached by Troy. “Madison’s right. Arm up everyone who is not sick,” Jake said. “War is the last resort but we’re there. We have no leverage.” Aliciaย claims to know a way to get some.ย

Strand searches the yacht for supplies. He comes across empty bottles before heading to the top of the ship. The yacht is out of order and not going to work. He searches every crack but finds nothing. Atop the ship, he puts on a white suit jacket, pops champagne, and calls out, “It’s good to be home!”

Jake talks to Nick, who wants off of his bed and notices Jake is sick. Nick wants to talk with Jeremiah but Jake insists Jeremiah will only disappoint him, blaming him for the whole situation.ย

While Jeremiah and others bury bodies, Nick has a plan of his own. He rips up the floorboards in his house.ย

Later, Ofelia approaches Walker in the motel. She explains that she cared about the Clark family. She feels betrayed by not being told she was sent with anthrax. Walker credits her as a hero. He starts telling a story about the time he saved her with his horse. She was a woman who had faced death and wasn’t afraid. He tells her the debt owed for saving her life has been paid. Suddenly, someone calls out about a fire outside.

Madison and Alicia hitch a wagon to her truck. Some of Walker’s men spot the militia and begin gunning them down. Madison rushes back to the truck. Troy covers them and kills some of the Native Americans before leaping into the truck. The truck starts to pull away with Walker’s trailer in tow.

Meanwhile, Nick has dug a whole beneath his house.

He enters Jeremiah’s house and finds him drinking. Nick reveals the skull which was in his floor, asking who it is. Jeremiah shuts it down by calling it a long story. “Tell it to me,” Nick said. The “local Indian tribe” decided this land belonged to them when Jake and Troy were boys. The young Native Americans decided to start trouble by stealing from him and killing his cattle. Him, Phil, Russell and Vernon killed three of them. One of them turned out to be Walker’s uncle. The skull in Nick’s floor was Walker’s father. Nick begins calling Jeremiah out but Jeremiah insists he is a guest here. “Get right with the past or get off my land,” Jeremiah said. “The land belongs to whoever can hold it.”

“The Indians are coming,” Nick said. “And Walker is coming for you. So, I guess we’ll see who can hold the land then.”

The next day, Madison arrives with Walker’s trailer of relics. Jeremiah isn’t happy about it. Nick asks if he is scared.ย

Moments later, Nick tells Alicia and Madison about Jeremiah’s previous deeds. Alicia insists they’re on the wrong side. Nick doesn’t want to cross any lines like Jeremiah does. He reveals Troy’s lie of killing the Trimbol’s to Alicia, who is disgusted to learn what her family lied about. She tells Madison, “You’re just like them! You’re worse, you’re heartless! No wonder dad was so depressed, he was living with a g–d— corpse!” Madison insists she always had to keep everyone together and Alicia has no idea what she carries.ย

Stand is drunk, messing with his radio. He eventually picks up a song. Someone beings talking to him in Russian before introducing himself. “This is Victor Strand in Baja, California. I read you loud and clear.” Mr. Vaschankoย is mocks Strand’s curiosity about if this virus has effected the rest of the world. The man says he is speaking to Strand from space. They begin quoting literature in their conversation, agreeing that champagne and vodka are what they need. “Last words are for fools, they are not said enough,” Mr. Vaschankoย said. The signal begins to cut out. “The world is dead,” Strand tells him.ย

“The world will not die until you die,” the astronaut tells him. “Do not wait until your death bed to enjoy your champagne.” The signal is lost and Strand breaks down. He talks to the sky.ย

Madison speaks with Walker at the gate of Broke Jaw Ranch. She offers to return the artifactsย as long as Walker agrees to peace. Madison hands over Walker’s father’s skull. He still says this is not enough. “This isn’t my father, this is an old white man shame,” Walker said before handing it over and sending her back. She tells Troy, Jake, Alicia, and Nick that they have until sundown the next day to clear out or die.ย

At night, Strand prepares himself on the boat. He pours alcohol all over it on the way out and grabs his sunglasses before lighting it on fire. He walks along the beach with a smileย as it burns.

Madison enters her family’s quarters where Alicia is packing up. “You two have never been to Montgomery,” she said. “There was a man there. A local councilman. He had a beautiful wife and they had a lonesome little girl. Girl knew everybody loved her daddy…”

“He knew when to burn the ballot boxes and which ones to burn but what he didn’t know, what he never could learn, was when to turn down a drink. So, life was hard for the little girl. It was harder for her mother. As she grew, she got tired. Tired of crying. G–d— exhausted of icing her mother’s face, pulling out stitches because her mama didn’t wanna go back to the emergency room. I just got tired. One morning, she ate her cereal. She brushed her teeth for school. She took the gun out of her daddy’s dresser. She shot him. Shot him while he slept off the night before. Yeah. My mama looked at me then like you’re looking at me now. I knew that was something I’d have to carry. I’d do it again. I’d live with the look. I’d do it a thousand times to protect her. To protect you.”

Nick and Alicia are shocked.ย “I’m gonna go talk to an old man, convince him to set aside his pride, make peace with the enemy,” she said.ย

Jeremiah is fortifying his office. Madison walks in without knocking. “I’m going Alamo, Madison,” he said. “I built this house as a holdout in case we were ever over run or under siege.” He believes himself to be prepared for the battle. Jeremiah offers Madison a drink and pours himself a little more. He thanks her for protecting his boys and standing by them. She tells Jeremiah there is one way to secure the peace. He jokes that Walker wants his scalp. She doesn’t respond so he questions if she is here to kill him.

He tries to reason with her. She puts her gun on the table and says she isn’t going to kill him. She pushes the gun to him and insists he kill himself. “I didn’t outlive Phil and Russellย and two good women to die like some rabbit with no resistance,” he said. She insists if he doesn’t do it, he loses the ranch, and therefore his legacy as everyone including his sons dies. He orders her out of the room and insists she do it herself if that’s what has to happen.ย

Nick enters the room, now. Jeremiah mocks him and says his mom is “exactly like” and doesn’t finish the sentence before Nick shoots him in the head. She tells Nick, “I need you to do exactly as I say!”

Troy and Jake rush into the room. Troy finds his father and rushes to him, emotionally. Moments later, they carry his body to the pick-up truck.ย

Madison, Alicia and Nick stand on the ranch’s balcony where Jeremiah used to overlook the community. They watch Jake and Troy deliver Jeremiah’s body to a coffin.

In the barn, later, Madison observes the coffin. As the sun comes up, she delivers a bag to Walker. He looks inside of it to find a Jeremiah’s head. They part ways, peacefully.ย
