Everyone involved with The Walking Dead is going great lengths to ensure the cliffhanger offered to fans during the concluding moments of the show’s sixth season keeps its secret intact. With that in mind, many are wondering how AMC will unveil the trailer for The Walking Dead‘s seventh season.

Every detail of the trailer, which will arrive in less than a month during San Diego Comic Con, will be analyzed by fans. Frame by frame, viewers will break down the trailer and look for clues regarding who it is that Negan kills to start the season. Plus, The Walking Dead‘s Comic Con trailers are a bit longer than your normal trailer. Last year’s season six trailer ran over four minutes long despite only teasing events from the season’s first half.
So, how will the trailer avoid spoiling Negan’s kill? It will show all of the other craziness going on in and around Alexandria.
With Negan introduced, a whole new world is ripe for exploration. The trailer can offer fans the first look at the Sanctuary, Negan’s hideout, without going into too many details to spoil truly meeting the location when the show returns.
Keeping with Negan, the new villain has a lot to show for himself. His army has been revealed but his methods and core buddies are still very much under wraps. The trailer can easily spend over a minute (if not more) delivering lines from Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character and offering peeks at his lifestyle.
The Sanctuary isn’t the only new location coming to season three. We’ll also be meeting The Kingdom, a college campus turned safe-zone lead by the kingly Ezekiel and his pet tiger Shiva. Almost everyone is expecting to see the tiger in season 7’s trailer and revealing not only actor to play Ezekiel in the trailer but also such a wild beast is a great way to satisfy (or at least distract) a fanbase hungry for answers.
Should the Kingdom be heavily included in the new trailer, we’ll also be seeing Morgan and Carol as (spoiler alert) that’s where they are headed to start season seven. Carol is in serious danger of her life fading from her after a run in with a savior in the season six finale but appeared to be in good hands when the armored men on horses came to her and Morgan’s aid. The next steps for this duo, especially the mentality of Carol after a run-in with death and Morgan after killing a man, can certainly be teased to take up a good bit of the trailer.
Of course, the trailer will have to feature Rick Grimes, who we all assume is safe regardless of his current predicament with Negan. Also commonly ruled safe is Carl Grimes. We can certainly expect to see a bit of their reactions to Negan’s brutal murder right before their eyes, as well as the rest of Alexandria’s. A handful of characters are still available which won’t spoil the mystery: Tara, Gabriel, Eric and Tobin to name a few.
Don’t forget the Hilltop, either. The Hilltop is the reason Rick’s group got into their whole mess with Negan in the first place. You can count on seeing Tom Payne’s Jesus and Xander Berkeley’s Gregory for at least a few moments in the new trailer.
In short, we can expect to see new locations, new characters, and reactions to Negan’s kill. Rick’s plan for revenge will likely be teased but the character will largely appear quite broken. We’ll likely see a tease of the iconic “Something to Fear” storyline from the comics and hopefully a look at the “All Out War” adaptation to come.
Will we see any of the other potential victims: Daryl, Michonne, Abraham, Glenn, Maggie, Aaron, Eugene, Rosita, or Sasha? Probably. But you can bet the kill(s) won’t be revealed by the season seven trailer next month.
The Walking Dead will return for its seventh season in October.
