The Walking Dead‘s Say Yes episode has a slightly open-ended note. Rosita Espinosa decided it is time to stop waiting for Rick Grimes and Michonne to be ready for a war with Negan. She wants her revenge on the man who killed Abraham, Glenn, Spencer, and Olivia and she wants it now.
While Rosita is wise enough to realize she can’t take Negan an his men out alone, she does think one extra well-trained body will be enough to carry out an assassination mission. This is why she head out for the Hilltop with one of Rick’s new rifles to enlist Sasha as her partner on this “one way ticket” mission.
Sasha quickly agreed. She is ready to sacrifice herself and anything else necessary to achieve justice for her fallen boyfriend Abraham, whose skull was bashed by Negan in the Season 7 premiere.
Sasha’s death has long been expected by fans of The Walking Dead.
First of all, Sonequa Martin-Green, the actress burdened with playing the role was cast in CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery series. Filming a movie in the AMC series’ off-season or doing an appearance on television is usually nothing out of the ordinary for cast members. For example, Danai Gurira is currently working on Marvel’s Black Panther film while The Walking Dead is between production schedules. However, Martin-Green joined the Star Trek series in a key role.
Furthermore, Sasha has shown all the necessary signs of filling out the role of Holly from Robert Kirkman‘s original The Walking Dead comics. Holly was dating Abraham at the time of his death in issue #97, leading her to seek revenge upon the Negan and the Saviors in a self-sacrificing plunge into the Sanctuary while driving a school bus. She, however, survived and was taken hostage until being delivered back to Alexandria with a bag over her head. When the bag was taken off, readers and characters both came to the harsh realization that Holly was no a zombie.
With Rosita and Sasha heading to the Sanctuary, where Eugene appears ready to spend an extended amount of time, it seems likely that Sasha will realize Holly’s iconic comic book fate in the television adaptation, though her arrival to Negan’s hideout will have been slightly altered.
With so many fans expecting Sasha to meet her end before Season 7 comes to a close, the writers might have a trick up their sleeve in which they can swap the death. It seems most likely that only Sasha will make it into Negan’s Sanctuary or only Rosita will make it out but the option of having Eugene or Rosita delivered to Alexandria with a bag over their heads remains, as well.
For more details on why Eugene might be checking out in the Season 7 finale instead of Holly, check out ComicBook.com’s more fleshed out theory.
