The war is upon us. The first photo from the eighth season of AMC‘s The Walking Dead has been released and the characters are readying themselves for the battles ahead.
In the first official look at the Season 8 premiere, which happens to the 100th episode overall for the series, Daryl Dixon and Carol Pelettier are ready for battle. Both are heavily armed and on the lookout for threats which may or may not be headed their way. As for the location, it’s anybody’s guess, but the two characters were last seen together in the Season 7 finale chasing Negan and his Saviors out of Alexandria.

“The season finale last year, seeing all the characters together interacting as one, was thrilling. It was exciting to see all these configurations of characters we hadn’t seen before. Even Aaron merely giving Jerry an apple felt satisfying,” The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple tells EW. “This is that times a million. Though it would be cool if the season began with just everybody giving each other apples. I’d be down with that. But it’s not that.”
The season is very much going to be a war. Several actors have teased as much to ComicBook.com over the show’s offseason.
“Yeah, it’s a big, big show,” Simon actor Steven Ogg said. “I mean I really didn’t think about the one hundred thingso much as it’s, where it says it’s all out war, you definitely get that. Oh yeah. It’s all out war.”
In addition to moments which “are some of the best that have ever been shot,” Paul “Jesus” Rovia actor Tom Payne promises “one of the iconic sequences in the show” when they show returns, claiming such a sequence “has never happened before.”
“I’m super excited,” Payne said. “It’s a sequence that was shot which has never happened before in the show and I’m really excited to see it myself and for the audiences to see it.”
The Walking Dead will debut its Season 8 trailer next week at San Diego Comic Con, along with more new photos and an official premiere date being announced.
