While the focus of The Walking Dead this week was on Sasha and Rosita, fans did get a small glimpse at Eugene’s life at the Sanctuary. He looked happy and content, and seemed to enjoy bossing others around.
Fans may have thought this was an act, biding his time until his friends came to take out Negan. Unfortunately, it looks like Eugene has actually gone over to the dark side on a full-time basis.
As Rosita and Sasha tried to tell Eugene to escape with them, giving him a free way out, he refused. He claimed that his place was there, and they needed to go on without him.
Why wouldn’t Eugene go with them?
It’s pretty simple at this point – Eugene is okay with life under Negan. The guy got a taste of what power felt like, and he began to understand that he could do more than just be the smart guy with the mullet.
In the Sanctuary, Eugene is someone to be taken seriously. All of the common people look at him the same way they look at Dwight – up.
For once in Eugene’s life, he feels like he really matters. No one has to baby the guy, or pretend to respect the things he says. Isn’t that enough to make anyone turn?
The tough part here is figuring out what Eugene will do next. As the war begins, will seeing one of his friends die be enough to send him back to the good guys? or has he fully bought in to being one of Negan.
If Sasha runs into him inside the walls of the Sanctuary, that will be Eugene’s true test. Does he give up a friend, or face a certain death?
