Making a return in Sunday’s new Rock in the Road episode of The Walking Dead was Eric. The character has made sporadic appearances on the AMC series for the last few months but was heavily felt in the well-balanced midseason 7 premiere.

The scene which truly stands out, however, was when he caught his longtime boyfriend Aaron packing a bag. The two shared a lighthearted moment but don’t seem to be on the same page when it comes to Aaron helping Rick’s initiative in taking down Negan.

ComicBook.com caught up with Ross Marquand to hear his perspective on the scene and how Aaron’s choices will effect the relationship with Eric going forward.

“Eric is understandably very hesitant to go out guns blazing because he’s seen how that hasn’t worked for them in the past and he’s just worried that, especially after I just gotten my life handed to me, almost getting killed by these guys,” Marquand says. “He’s not really gung-ho about me going out yet again to go on another mission. I think Aaron is very torn because he wants to make sure that that relationship is sound and they’re not fighting all the time, but at the same time, he really feels like we have to bring the fight to them if they’re going to survive.”

Aaron, typically a pacifist, has quickly bought into Rick Grimes‘s plans.

“There’s so many different factions of thought of how we’re going to address the threat of Negan and some of them think like we have to go meet them head on,” Marquand says. “Some of them think we just work with them. I think Aaron’s kind of realizing that, more and more, we can be diplomatic as much as we want, but it’s not going to change anything with these guys. It’s never enough, just never enough for them.”

“You have to fight back,” Marquand concluded.
