The Walking Dead‘s eighth season offered some of the most compelling and intense content packed into the AMC series since its launch. However, the 16-episode run from October through April left fans and critics hungry for something more, often complaining about the season’s pacing as Negan bullied the Alexandrian community.

Heading into Season 8 and the milestone which is Episode 100, the pacing criticisms sound like they will be a thing of the past. Writer and creator of both the AMC and comic series Robert Kirkman fielded questions from press at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour where he teased a new, faster pace for the show.

The Walking Dead “has been all about an expanding scale for the last two seasons, and that’s really hitting its pinnacle this season,” Kirkman said. “We’ve got all these different factions, all these different locations โ€” the Hilltop, the Sanctuary โ€” and getting all these people together and continuing to expand the scale in a cool way, but really using all these pieces to their fullest. We’ve spent a lot of time setting these characters up, and now we’re going to bash them against each other and see what happens. โ€ฆ This is another continuation of that; this is a very fresh take on the world of The Walking Dead, and we’re going to be breaking a lot of new ground this season.”

As far as breaking new ground is concerned, Kirkman is not the only person involved with the series making such teases. Jesus actor Tom Payne has also promised the series will do something it has never done before in the new season and the Season 8 trailer teased a shocking twist coming in the premiere.
