Even though Negan was the one to take out Glenn and Abraham in the season seven premiere of The Walking Dead, he’s not the one fans have taken to hating the most. For most people, that honor falls to Dwight.
Negan’s sidekick tortured Daryl, trying to turn him to Negan’s side, even though he struggles with following Negan in the first place.
With Dwight finally returning to the show this week, people are going to be wondering what direction his story will take next. When you turn to the comics, you see that he could have some very big moments in the coming seasons.
In the comic series, Dwight was a very similar character at his introduction. He seemed hateful, and hell-bent on doing anything Negan asked of him. However, his appearance in The Kingdom changed everything.
When Rick and Ezekiel agreed to fight The Saviors together, the King revealed one crucial part of their battle plan – Dwight the Defector. Dwight was tired of Negan, and he ended up switching sides for the war.
While he continued to fight alongside Negan, he was acting as an undercover agent. His true allegiance was to Rick and the others, and he assisted in the eventual downfall of Negan.
After the war, Rick gave Dwight control of Sanctuary. With Negan gone, someone had to keep that community together.
In the most recent issues of the comics, Dwight took up a much bigger role. The guy didn’t like being a community leader, and felt he was of more use to Rick elsewhere. During the Whisperer War, Dwight became Rick’s leading general.
If things unfold in a similar way on the show, Dwight could be in for a major change before the end of this season.
