Fans have always complained about Carl's antics on The Walking Dead, but no one can deny how vital the character is to the show. Even at his most difficult, Carl's actions directly drive Rick's decisions.
Many would argue, especially comic readers, that Carl is actually the focal point of the series, not Rick. Even though the latter is leading the people, the show acts as a coming-of-age story about a boy in a broken world.
According to Chandler Riggs' father, the show might not keep true to that sentiment.
In a cryptic Facebook post, William Riggs, father of the Carl actor, thanked The Walking Dead's cast and crew for the past seven seasons. The post has since been deleted, but here's what the text said:
"7 year contract completed! Grateful to AMC, Cast & Crew, TWD fan base, and especially Chandler for always being 100% dedicated. Whether is was getting up at 4 AM, working in the freezing cold past 2 AM, leaving his friends and carefree kiddom behind, scrambling to make up missed schoolwork, he has done it without complaint and always made me proud & amazed to be his dad!"
While he doesn't say Chandler is leaving the show, it sounds a lot like a goodbye. This is the kind of thing actors say when their show ends, or their character is killed.
The timeline for this post also adds to the speculation, as the seventh season of The Walking Dead wrapped production on Friday. Pair this, with the fact that Chandler recently announce his acceptance into Auburn University, it definitely seems like his time could be up.
On the other hand, Carl has a lot more story left to play out. The comics are into issue #160, and he's still one of the main characters. There's also the fact that Rick would lose his mind if anything happened to Carl. If Carl was killed, many would wonder if Rick could even keep going.
All signs point to Riggs signing on for more seasons, as many as The Walking Dead has left, but there has been no official word on a new contract.
Could Carl be leaving The Walking Dead? Only time will tell.
