The character of Paul "Jesus" Monroe in Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comics has been a fan-favorite since he burst into the pages and managed to take down Michonne and Abraham with ease. When introduced on the AMC series as Paul "Jesus" Rovia, the live-action adaptation embarrassed Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes with his ninja-like abilities.
In addition to his impressive fighting skills and level-headed leadership in the comics, there is another characteristic many fans are hoping to see adapted to television: Jesus' sexuality.
In the most recent issue of The Walking Dead comics, Kirkman addressed the matter in the Letter Hacks section.
"If I was coy before..." Kirkman started, "I’ll be less so now, Jesus is gay on the TV show, as well."
Speaking to Tom Payne ahead of this Sunday's new episode of The Walking Dead, ComicBook.com asked the actor if he can confirm that Jesus will be gay in the live action adaptation, remaining true to the comic book counterpart, and the actor did just that.
"Yeah, [he] will be," Payne said. "I can't tell you how that might be addressed in the show or how it would come across, but yeah. Essentially he is the same as he is the comic books in that regard."
As for whether or not we will see the details of Jesus' pre-apocalypse life on television or in the comics, Payne is not filled with the same good news.
"I'm not sure there are right now, but I would obviously love that in the same way that Morgan had his episode," Payne said. "Kirkman talked about that in the last comic book as well, because someone brought it up and then they were talking how Negan had his one, and how it would be cool to give Jesus his own one. But at the same time, I kind of like the mystery behind it and I like people coming up with their own theories and their own reasoning for how he became the guy that he is. I think it's a very interesting story, but they're probably not to explore it for a while."
