Last week's episode of The Walking Dead left fans on a bit of an exciting note, as Dwight told Rick he wanted to help him defeat Negan. Rick immediately put the man on his knees, and cocked a gun in front of his face.
No one is sure exactly what Rick will do next, but it should probably be something involving hearing Dwight out. The guy is the closest person to Negan, and he's the only one that could put Rick in a real position to kill him.
And, if you've read the comics, you know that Rick will eventually benefit from having Dwight around. Not only does Dwight help him defeat Negan in the long run, but he ends up saving Rick's life at one point.
Negan eventually comes up with a plan to kill Rick and the others, but coating their knives and arrows with the blood from walkers. That way, if they even knicked an enemy, they would die from the infection.
Dwight had to keep his allegiance to Negan evident, while still helping out Rick under the table. So, when he had an opportunity to shoot Rick with his crossbow, he had to take it.
This moment made readers believe Dwight was still an enemy. All of Negan's men dipped their weapons in the blood, so it looked like Rick was dead to rights.
However, Dwight kept one arrow clean. He knew he had to shoot Rick to keep Negan's trust, but he made sure to hit him where it would turn out to be nothing more than a flesh wound. Of course, Negan believed that Rick would be dead in a matter of days. This led him to stay away from Alexandria, and wait until the survivors panicked at Rick's death.
While Negan waited, Rick planned an attack that would turn the tide of the war. By Dwight tricking Negan he not only saved Rick's life, he gave Alexandria a shot at winning the All Out War.
