Spoilers for The Walking Dead comics.
The alliance between Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom is embittered in a brutal war against Negan and the Saviors, and it's about to get worse: the newest promo for Sunday's mid-season finale sees Negan and his army launching an attack on Alexandria in the dead of night, confirming episode 8x08 as an adaptation of issues #119 and #120 of The Walking Dead comics.
Though the exact circumstances are different, the gist will be the same: a supremely pissed off Negan rolls up to Alexandria's gates and raises hell.
Negan and his Saviors toss grenades over Alexandria's walls. Negan tells Rick this all could have been avoided if only he followed his rules and asks Lucille — his barbwire-wrapped baseball bat — if she's jealous.
"You're jealous of those grenades, right? You want in on the action... you want to get dirty, don't you?" He asks, sweet talking his beloved weapon.
"I can't blame you -- sitting on the outside, hearing the screams behind those walls, watching the fires burn... it's like being a double amputee at a peep show."
Carl and surrogate mother Andrea are claimed by Rick as Ezekiel and Michonne evacuate Alexandrians from their homes. Carl, Andrea and Rick are almost killed by a nearby blast and Alexandria is ultimately rescued by Maggie and a cavalry of Hilltop members, who fire upon the Saviors and repel Negan and his army.
Negan and the Saviors flee, but the foul-mouthed baddie insists it's not a retreat: it's a victory. Alexandria has suffered massive damage.
The extended sneak peek for the mid-season finale teases Negan following up on his promise he made to Eugene in 8x07: "You do realize the storm of shit I’m gonna dump on Rick as soon as I’m clear of the shit storm he dumped on me," Negan said, Eugene giving the affirmative.
Brace for said storm of shit.
The Walking Dead airs it's extended mid-season finale tonight at 9/8c on AMC.
