Fear The Walking Dead Recap With Spoilers: Burning In Water, Drowning In Flame

A man rolls over in bed and lights a candle. He sees his wife walking around and calls out for her, asking if she’s alright. She is infected and approaches him. He opens arms and allows her to get in close. She tries to bite hise neck but her teeth have been removed. He holds her and starts to dance with her before putting a gun to his own head and shooting them both with one bullet. They fall into the lantern he had lit and it starts to burn their entire house down.

The opening credits play.

Madison, Nick and Luciana wake up to some startling noise. They rush to investigate and find the burning house. Jake Otto is dishing out orders, calling for more water. The entire Broke Jaw community is either helping or watching. A little girl realizes the people inside are dead. Jeremiah steps forward and orders them to stop, the people inside are gone. “Save the water, let it burn,” he said.

The next day, soldiers prepare for a trip with Madison. She asks if they’re worried. They’re not but they also say they can’t help it if she gets left behind. “You should be scared but you’re not,” he said. “You should know whwat you’re getting into sweetheart.” She stands up for herself, though. Nick and Alicia tell her there are other ways to contribute. A few feet away, Troy honks a horn and invites her into the truck. As she says goodbye to her kids, Troy annoyingly continues to honk the horn. She gets in and they drive off with the convoy.

Moments later, Jake approaches Alicia in the food area. He says he is happy she is enjoying Bible study and touches her hand which prompts her to jump and drop it. Gretchen steps in after he walks away to let Alicia know that the Browns, the people who died last night, were co-founders of this community.

Nick delivers food to Luciana. She is still unhappy to be here. He is still thinking about the fire. Luciana thinks it is beautiful how they were together to the end. She wants to leave and claims Nick is afraid to leave his family. “I can’t live here,” she said. He won’t force her to. She wants him to come with her.

Strand and Daniel sit in the Maserati watching infected pass by. Daniel has a big rifle now. Strand refuses to drive through the dead because he doesn’t want damage the car. The two banter back and forth until Strand almost gets caught in his lie about Ofelia’s location. Ultimately, Daniel orders Strand drive through the dead, so he does.

Alicia approaches Jake on his room and apologizes for ow she acted. She says she didn’t know about the people in the fire. He accepts her apology and asks if she needs something. “We’re never gonna be normal again, are we?” she said before reflecting on her plans she had before the apocalypse. They kiss once and then get into it some more.

Meanwhile, Madison and her squad arrive at their destination. Troy insists they don’t use guns because they’re too loud. The group approaches a bunch of infected wearing orange prison jumpsuits next to a crashed bus. Troy is first to start killing them, apparently enjoying it, with Madisonquickly joining in. She finds herself pinned beneath two infected before long with one soldier shooting one down before she uses a knife to kill the other. Troy continues to massacre the dead as though it were an art form until they’re all eliminated. “That’s a beautiful thing,” he exhales. He asks who timed it and one soldier says they did it in just under a minute. The soldier who doubted Madison takes it back.

Nick walks around by himself. He finds a photo of a couple.

Meanwhile, Alicia dresses herself in Jake’s bed. She spots books and starts questioning Jake’s art hobbies. He is a writer. Before she quickly leaves, he gives her a book, titled “Burning in Water, Drowning in Flames.” She’s not interested. She used to beinterested in things like this but doesn’t see a point now. 

Nick is cleaning the burnt home while Jeremiah approaches him. Jeremiah says the community works together and insists Nick is a part of it now.  This was his home. Jeremiah reflects on living here before the big house. Nick hands him the photograph he found and Jeremiah is very grateful. Jeremiah admires the craftsmanship of a gun. They have different views on beauty, apparently, like they do most things. Jeremiah gave this gun to Russell when he first moved into the house. They hung it on the wall. “Every home needs a gun,” Jeremiah said. Nick is very suspicious of Jeremiah. 

Elsewhere, the convoy continues their journey. There is nothing here. Madison insists somebody “hauled it away.” Only small remains of the helicopter crash can be seen. A soldier finds a 23 caliber bullet and hands it to Troy. The group wonders where this came from. Madison has Travis on her mind. The group leaves, following Madison’s lead.

Back in the truck, Troy blasts some rock music and criticizes the amount of fight Madison has. He insists she should have less room for grief. He believes in revenge and says it is his calling. She loses interest and raises the volume.

Strand and Daniel stand at a roadside. Strand questions how Daniel survived the fire. Daniel says he was spared and suggests it was the devil who helped him. Daniel is still not trusting Strand as he promises to take them to the hotel. Victor has had enough of the threats and tells Daniel to kill him now if he wants to. Someone is watching them. 

Nick sits with Jeremiah and continues to talk. He talks about lessons he learned from his father. He sees his Luciana. Nick questions how the living could be worse than the dead and people should stick together. Jeremiah tells a story about Troy throwing a fit and being locked away in the basement. He wasn’t angry, he only apologizes for Jeremiah’s erros. Jeremiah had been an alcoholic and forgot he locked him there.  “Your mama wants to stay and your lady wants to go. What do you want?” Jeremiah said.

Nick questions why Jeremiah quit drinking. “I was shooting deer one day drunk,” Jeremiah said. “Damn near blew my d— off.” 

The convoy investigates a farm. Troy leads the way.  Madison looks around outside. They come together and smell something intriguing, following it down a hill to a pile of burnt bodies. In the distance, they see a man sitting on a rock with a crow on his shoulder. He is repeating himself as the crow pecks at his head. It has ripped the skin from the back of his head. Troy approaches first as one soldier vomits. “I saw, when I went up the stair, a little man who wasn’t there,” the man said. Madison uses Troy’s knife to put him down, slowly. They want to go but are approached by a man and a new group.

Troy knows the man. The man claims they were only defending the land. Troy insists they are dead now but the man insists they lower the weapons. The man insists they are surrounded. Snipers are looking on from rocks every where. Madison tells Troy to give the order and he does. They hand over their weapons. “We’re gonna take your guns, vehicles, supplies, your boots…”

“My father’s gonna kill you,” Troy promises. The man just insists they take off their boots. “Tell your people it’s time for justice,” the man said. “Abandon the ranch.” The man insists that if they don’t listen to him he will feed every person to the crows. Madison says this became he cause when he shot down the helicopter and took someone of hers. 

Alicia lays in bed. Jake invites her out to a lake. He vouches for art while she vouches for food and water. Jake wants something greater than guns to live for. 

Strand and Ofelia arrive at the hotel. Strand is worried by the open gate and lack of guards but Daniel insists they enter, so they do..

Daniel gets out to investigate it, ordering Strand to stay close. Inside, the power is out. Strand suggests waiting until daylight. Daniel rings the bell at the desk, luring all of the infected here. Strand confesses that Ofelia left them behind. Daniel watches the horde al lbut consume him and leaves. Strand gets out of the hotel just in time to see Daniel driving away in the Maserati. He runs away on his own.

Nick leads Luciana to a candlelit surprise. She looks happy. They lay together and watch the stars. Nick tells the story of how the two people met who lived in the community. He thinks this place can be great. Luciana is reluctant to agree so she just starts kissing him.

Troy’s group heads back to the Ranch barefoot. Their feet hurt and they want to stop but Troy insists they keep going because they have to beat their enemy to the Ranch. “You want him to follow you out of fear or respect?” Madison asks. Troy orders her away from them and questions why she is stepping up like this, insisting it is his mission. Madison questions why she is so fixated on her son and concludes Troy’s mother didn’t love him. Madison asks the group who wants to rest and they all want to. Troy insists that at first light they get moving or he will leave them for the wasted.

Madison sleeps by the fire. Troy puts a knife to her throat.  She wakes up and insists he is better than this. He scampers off. One soldier woke up and looked on. He stares at Madison but rolls over without saying anything.  

Nick wakes up to find a note from Luciana. She is nowhere to be found.

Troy’s group continues their trek with no shoes. 

Luciana walks along a long border wall.

Alicia ponders a cliff. 

The group finally arrives at the Ranch again. Troy and Madion have an unspoken chemistry now. 

Alicia jumps off the cliff. She lands in water and rises up out of it with a smile.

Jeremiah approaches Nick at the house. He puts the gun, now cleaned, down for him and consoles him over Luciana’s departure with a pat on the shoulder.
