Losing a shocking cast member on The Walking Dead doesn't mean the AMC series won't feature them throughout the remainder of Season 8.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead Episode 8x08, How It's Gotta Be, follow.

Although Carl Grimes will be dying when The Walking Dead returns in 2018, Chandler Riggs is promising fans will see more of him throughout the season. "You'll see bits and pieces and memories of Carl throughout the second half," Riggs told THR. "But his final moments are coming pretty soon."

It's not uncommon for The Walking Dead to feature fallen characters in flashback form. Hershel, Abraham, and Sasha have all made post-mortem appearances on the AMC series.

As Rick remembers Carl, there may be opportunities for the characters and audience to learn lessons from the sheriff's only son as the show goes on. "Carl in his final moments is trying to teach Rick what he can so Rick doesn't make any more of the same mistakes that he has in the past," Riggs said. Carl has been watching this whole time and learning from Rick and seeing what he's done right and what he's done wrong, and Carl has come out of that as a very wise and old soul. Carl is going to try and give Rick every last bit of advice that he can."

How and when Riggs and his Carl Grimes counterpart will appear in The Walking Dead beyond Episode 8x09 will be explored when the show returns for its later-than-usual back half.
