The Walking Dead‘s Season 6 cliffhanger surprised a lot of viewers (and stirred up other, less desirable emotions, too) but it also surprised its centerpiece actor. Jeffrey Dean Morgan not only had no idea who his Negan character was killing upon introduction but also didn’t know the episode would end as a mystery.

“No, they did not tell me,” Morgan says regarding who he brought the bat down on. “I don’t know that anybody knew on that particular evening, and if they did, no one has copped to me. But I certainly didn’t know.”

“And by the way, I didn’t even know it was going to end in a cliffhanger,” Morgan reveals. “I didn’t know that, you know? The way that we shot it last year, my feeling was they just didn’t want to see us actors see the crushing blows of who was at the end of Lucille, so they were going to shoot that separately, and we would see it at the finale. It turns out exactly what I shot is exactly how it ended.”

Morgan admits his surprise of how adamant fans were with their reactions to being left in the dark for six months but has big promises on The Walking Dead‘s making fans regretting their wish of seeing a beloved character die. “I’ll say this, you have to be careful what you wish for, audience, because you’re going to get those answers answered and more, and you’re probably not going to be happy with it,” he says.
