Netflix has created its fair share of original programming to help prove it’s become a premier spot for streaming, with the animation world being no exception. While the streaming service has created heart-pounding action series like Devil May Cry and Castlevania, it also created plenty of comedies, including Big Mouth and Inside Job. Amongst the many animated series Netflix has created in its history, only one can be universally thought of as the most “depressing” entry in the platform’s library. Twelve years ago, fans were introduced to a former television star whose journey could sometimes be tough to watch.

In 2014, Bojack Horseman debuted on Netflix, following the titular character as he struggled with his life now that his fame had faded. While Bojack never needed to worry much about money, thanks to being the star of a 90’s sitcom titled “Horsin’ Around,” he had plenty of other things to worry about. Bojack himself was never the best of people, constantly finding himself running afoul of his friends while never quite finding the acceptance he was looking for. Throughout the six seasons of the show, Bojack messes up quite a bit, losing friends and making enemies, but eventually finds the happiest ending that someone like himself could find. So why did Bojack Horseman end after seventy-six episodes?
Bojack Horseman’s Legacy

Despite having quite the lengthy run on Netflix, Bojack’s story would end in 2020, and it wasn’t the creators’ decision. Series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg has gone on record that the streaming service ultimately decided to end Bojack Horseman with season six, despite the fact that the animator had ideas for “several more years” of the animated series. Even though Bojack’s depressing story would end prematurely, Bob-Waksberg was still happy with the run it ultimately had, noting in previous interviews that many Netflix shows would never have the chance to run for six seasons.
As for the appeal of Bojack Horseman, the anthropomorphic universe saw Bojack messing up his life time and time again, routinely costing him friends and family as a result. While Horseman wouldn’t try to be malicious over the course of six seasons, many found themselves caught up in his addictive personality. Even though the animated series ended prematurely, it did end in a place that felt organic for the titular character.
While Bojack isn’t likely to return, this hasn’t stopped the animated show’s creator from exploring new territory. In 2025, Bob-Waksberg created a new series titled Long Story Short, which followed a human family as viewers explored their past, present, and future. This animated series was confirmed for a second season following its premiere season; Netflix has yet to confirm when the tear-jerker will make its grand return.
