Writer Brian K. Vaughan has left an indelible mark on the comic book industry. After a brief stint in TV with shows like Lost and Under the Dome, Vaughan returned with a collaboration with Fiona Staples that has since taken people by storm. Saga has since become one of Image Comics most popular series, second only to The Walking Dead.

But the writer has also had a hand in other popular series, such as Marvel’s Runways, Doctor Strange: The Oath, and Ex Machina. And even though Saga has since become the comic Vaughan is most known for, he initially made an impact with the long-running Vertigo series Y: The Last Man.

Created alongside Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man was optioned for film by New Line Cinema and languished in development hell before the rights reverted back to the creators in 2015. FX then put a series into development with Michael Green of American Gods to serve as the showrunner, but news has been slow since those announcements.

While speaking with CBR, Vaughan provided an update on the state of the series.

“I recently read a phenomenal draft of the Y: The Last Man pilot by Michael Green for FX,” Vaughan said. “Should have some very cool news about another adaptation soon.”

So while the first script is not yet in the can, it is being worked on and a draft has been completed. That’s some progress, at least! The single-male apocalypse is slow moving, but at least it’s on the way.

FX has a high pedigree of making amazing television, and Green has been doing great alongside Bryan Fuller on American Gods. It seems like Y: The Last Man is in great hands.โ€จโ€จ

But what other adaptation could be on the way? Ex Machina? The Private Eye? Both would be particularly relevant in the current cultural and political climate, which says a lot about Vaughan’s abilities as a storyteller. We can’t wait to learn more about what the writer has up his sleeve.

Saga #43 is in comic stores now and is available for just .25 cents in celebration of Image Comics 25th Anniversary.
