Earlier this season, Betty’s father, Hal Cooper, revealed to her and his wife, Alice, that Cheryl’s great-grandfather murdered her own over maple syrup. They were business partners, but great-grandfather Blossom got greedy, wanting the sweet, profitable business all to himself. It was believed that Betty’s dad mostly hated the Blossoms, and didn’t want his daughter Polly dating one, because every time he saw them living the good life it reminded him of the fortune that was wrongfully taken from the Coopers.

However, in the the penultimate episode, we learned there is a deeper connection between the Blossoms and the Coopers. Betty’s dad informs her and her mother that great-grandpappy Cooper wasn’t just murdered by a Blossom; he was a Blossom. “After the murder, our family severed ties with the Blossoms and their name,” Hal said. “We took a new one: Cooper.”
As Betty absorbed the fact that she is a Blossom, it dawns on Alice that Polly and Jason are relatives by blood, and that is reason her husband didn’t want them dating. It also explains why Hal tried to talk Polly into getting an abortion once he found she was pregnant by Jason.
So how will the incest revelation — which isn’t the twincest that everyone suspected — impact the Coopers? “They’re going to start being more truthful and they’re going to start having less secrets among them,” EP Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told EW. “The idea of them being one big family will come into play when Polly has those kids and it’s really a blended family that is there for Polly.”
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aguirre-Sacasa added: “I kind of thought everyone would suspect Cheryl [Madelaine Petsch] and Jason of incest, of twincest, but I thought it would be an interesting reversal if it was Jason and Polly [Tiera Skovbye] who were blood relatives and involved.”
