Major Sci-Fi TV Series Becomes Netflix Hit, 1 Year After Being Cancelled by Another Streamer (Could It Save the Show?)

A number of television shows have found new life on Netflix over the years, and we’ve seen that shake up the industry in several ways. Shows like The Office and Friends became immensely popular all over again with a new generation of fans after hitting the service, while other shows like Suits found an even bigger audience than they had during their initial runs. Then there are shows like Manifest and Cobra Kai, which were picked up by the streamer and continued when they needed new homes from their original networks. Now, yet another big series has become a hit on the streamer one year after its cancellation, and one has to wonder if there’s hope of it being saved as a result.

A glance at Netflix’s Top 10 TV Shows reveals that the former Paramount+ series Halo has made a strong debut on Netflix, coming in at number 4 in the Top 10. Halo is only behind Wayward, Love Is Blind, and Doc, and comes in ahead of Angela, Black Rabbit, House of Guinness, The Way Home, Earthquake: Joke Telling Business, and Wednesday (via Flix Patrol).

What This Means for a Possible Season 3

So the question now becomes if Halo can continue to build interest in its first two seasons on Netflix, could it end up getting a season 3 too? That’s where things get more complicated, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility, and the great news is that the show had rebounded in a major way from season 1, so it had some solid momentum.

Those who watched Halo season 2 were introduced to the terrifying threat known as the Flood, and they were shifting into the primary antagonist role in a possible season 3. We had also moved several of the other smaller stories forward and honed in on what really made John (Master Chief) tick. Season 2 fixed quite a few of the criticisms from season 1, and if given a season 3, the show has the potential to deliver something really special.

This has been an established practice for Netflix, which picked up both Manifest and Lucifer and allowed those shows to wrap up their runs. Season 2 clearly left off with plot threads and big threats unresolved, so if the team got at least a season to wrap up things, that might be the best-case scenario.

The Halo brand as a whole hasn’t been at its strongest over the past few years, but with a new game likely being announced this month at the Halo World Championship, it might be a perfect time for the Halo TV series to return, especially if that announcement is the long-awaited remake of Halo: Combat Evolved.

A Run Cut Short

The series was unfortunately cancelled by Paramount in July of 2024, and the studio released a statement that thanked the team for their hard work, even if they couldn’t continue with the series, though they didn’t say why the series was cancelled.

โ€œWe are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work,โ€ Paramount+ said in a statement. โ€œWe wish everyone the best going forward.โ€

โ€œWe deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future,โ€ 343 Industries said in a statement. โ€œWe are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world.โ€

We’ll have to wait and see, but Halo’s Netflix run is off to a strong start, and fingers crossed, we get to see Master Chief and Cortana reunited onscreen once more.
