Star Wars’ Most Unique Lightsaber Returns in New TV Show (But Will It Come Back for Good?)

Ever since Darth Maul ignited his double-bladed lightsaber in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the Star Wars franchise has become increasingly creative with the ancient weapon. We’ve seen colors like purple, yellow, and orange join the more standard red, blue, and green in live-action, and designs that have included crossguards, switchblades, and even a lightwhip. Whether it’s watching them on screen or even collecting them, the coolest lightsabers in Star Wars are a core part of its enduring appeal.

The most unique lightsaber in Star Wars, at least when it comes to color, is the Darksaber, which was first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and made it into live-action with The Mandalorian. It’s the saga’s only black blade, and the only one crafted by a Mandalorian Jedi. The weapon has a long, deadly history, and has passed through the hands of characters such as Darth Maul and Din Djarin, but it was destroyed by Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian Season 3 finale.

While that hasn’t (yet) been undone, the franchise has brought it back in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, where the Mandalorian Lando Calrissian (the Landolorian) wields it in an alternate galaxy. It’s an extremely fun use of it, and the series as a whole is well worth checking out, but could the Darksaber return properly?

Don’t Be Surprised If Star Wars Brings The Darksaber Back Permanently

The Darksaber destroyed in The Mandalorian Season 3 Finale

Impermanence is baked into Star Wars. We’ve known from the very beginning that not even death is final, with Jedi able to return as Force Ghosts. That’s something the franchise has played around with plenty over the years, such as Maul coming back after his apparent demise in The Phantom Menace, and Palpatine somehow returning. The same is true for lightsabers as well: the Skywalker saber was destroyed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but was fixed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

If someone, or something, is popular enough – and, more cynically, can be used to sell merchandise – then Star Wars finds a way. Thus, the Darksaber coming back cannot be ruled out. Of course, it wouldn’t be simple: the hilt was crushed, and it was last seen in the depths of Mandalore, before Gideon’s secret base was destroyed. But, just like Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker’s father, it’s not impossible. It very much could be found, and either fixed or parts of it used to create a new version of the Darksaber (especially if its Kyber crystal is still intact).

Why do it? While I personally don’t think it should return, unless it’s in shows or movies set before The Mandalorian Season 3, I can imagine some sense of logic and thematic intent behind it. The story of the Mandalorians is still far from over, and that is the weapon to unite them, and such an important piece of history, which has been around for over 1,000 years, would not be easy to simply let go. If Star Wars wants to continue Bo-Katan’s journey, or even if it returns to the idea of Grogu becoming the second Mandalorian Jedi, then it’s easy to think they’d want and get the Darksaber in order to establish and reflect their status.

We’ve already seen with The Mandalorian how it’ll go back on things. Din Djarin said goodbye to Grogu, and then reunited with him shortly after. He started taking off his helmet and questioning the Way, then recommitted and sought redemption. The Razor Crest was blown up, but he has a new one in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The same is true for his pulse rifle. So why wouldn’t they do this, eventually, with the Darksaber as well? It would be nice to let it go, but the weapon is undeniably cool, important, and will probably, somehow, come back.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released on May 22nd, 2026. All Star Wars movies and TV shows, including The Mandalorian, can be streamed on Disney+.
