The Boys loves to keep its audience guessing. Throughout Season 4, Billy Butcher leaves his team behind to work with Joe Kessler, a CIA operative who shares his goals and objectives. There’s something off about Kessler, though, as he pushes Butcher a bit too far, even getting upset with him when he doesn’t go far enough. Well, it turns out that Kessler isn’t real but a hallucination caused by the tumor in Butcher’s brain. Once the show comes clean about Kessler, it’s easy to go back and locate all the clues that point to him never actually being there. However, not every The Boys mystery gets as much attention as that one.

In The Boysย spinoff,ย Gen V, a significant event occurs at the end of the first season that turns life at Godolkin University upside down. Homelander himself even has to make an appearance to calm the situation down because it’s getting out of hand. But while the fallout from that moment has been well documented, there’s one question that has waited to be answered until the middle of Season 2.
Cate Dunlap Can’t Keep It Together Anymore in Gen V Season 1

Like Luke Riordan and Andre Anderson, Cate Dunlap is one of the top students at God U when Marie Moreau gets to the school. The cool kids show her the ropes, and everything seems fine until Luke, aka Golden Boy, kills himself after learning what’s really going on at the school. Cate becomes a shell of herself after losing her boyfriend, and the hits keep on coming when it comes to light that her adoptive mother, Indira Shetty, is working on a virus that will kill all Supes and experimenting on Luke’s brother, Sam. All the pain is too much to handle, so Cate goes on a killing spree on God U’s campus.
Not wanting to see anyone get hurt, Marie steps up to the plate and challenges Cate. Marie doesn’t yet have total control over her powers, but that’s not going to stop her from doing the right thing. While stopping Cate in place proves easy for Marie, things take a turn when she blows up her former friend’s arm. The entire campus is aghast at what’s happening, with even Homelander calling out Marie for the horrifying act. However, everything seems fine when Cate returns in The Boys Season 4, as she has both of her arms. It seems like Vought gives her the other one back as she works for Homelander, but Gen V Season 2 tells a different story.
Turning a Blind Eye Is No Longer a Possibility for Cate

All of Cate’s old pals return to God U at the start of Gen V Season 2, and they’re not very happy to see her. Her end of the reunion also takes a turn when she learns that Andre died while the group was being held at Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center. Cate goes to the new dean, Cipher, for answers, and he isn’t willing to give her any. After realizing her mistakes, she tries to make amends with Marie, Jordan Li, and Emma Meyer, and a fight breaks out. Cate ends up at the hospital, and rather than the show revealing her fully grown-back arm, half of it is still missing.
It turns out that Cate has been using a prosthetic arm since the fight in Season 1. The guards at Elmira force her to remove it in Season 2, Episode 5, after Cipher sends her there for trying to bring him down. The entire time, Cate has been fighting with one arm tied behind her back, which likely exacerbates the problems with her powers caused by her brain injury.
Gen V Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video.
