Westworld‘s first season provided many thrilling moments amid the series’ twists and turns. And despite internet sleuths predicting the major development, the season finale reveal of William’s eventual transformation into the Man In Black was well executed.

Whether you were surprised or had your suspicions confirmed, it was still one of the best moments on TV last year. And it was only possible through the tricky use of multiple timelines the show employed while telling the stories of Delores, William, Bernard and Arnold.
So now that Season 2 is on the way, where can they go from there?
Series showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan talked about those possibilities at PaleyFest (via TV Insider) and whether or not multiple timelines will continue to be a storytelling device on the show.
“I think as with Season 1, any basic different timelines were rooted in what the characters were going through,” Joy said.

“At that point, it made sense to do multiple timelines, because it showed how Delores felt, and that confusion: I’m in love, but this guy is coming for me. [Only] then realize, I haven’t changed, but so much time has changed and now he’s this. The timeline thing is in service of landing that point of view for Delores.”
She added, “I think we’ll experiment in different point of views and different angles. You don’t necessarily want to repeat the same thing.”
Keep in mind that the reveal of multiple timelines was a huge plot twist for the show, and if they were doing something similar they wouldn’t outright say so in a public panel a year before the show returns. They would definitely keep something like that close to the chest if they were trying something in line with the multiple timelines reveal.
We’ll see just how tricky Westworld can remain when Season 2 premieres on HBO next year.
