Years after the finale aired, Chuck star Zachary Levi is standing by the show’s ambiguous ending — even though he has pretty strong opinions about what happened after the cameras stopped rolling.

Before he worked on Tangled and the Thor franchise, Levi was best known as the title lead on Chuck, a series in which he co-starred with Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin. In the final episodes of the series, Chuck’s longtime love interest Sarah had lost her memories of the whole series, including her relationship with Chuck. As they tried to figure out what their next move was, the pair kissed on the beach, playing off the “magical Disney princess kiss” that could restore her memories — and then the series ended.
“I don’t know — I really don’t,” Levi admitted. “I understand why people were disappointed with it, I understand why some people weren’t disappointed with it. I understand why some people felt like it was open-ended, almost like a circle all the way back again. In some ways I think that’s sort of genius, if you imagine that we’ve come right back to the beginning and that Chuck and Sarah have to relive almost all those adventures and journeys all over again, like one big, screwed-up loop. It’s just so much work! Can you imagine Chuck having to win her heart every five years? Like, here we go again…”
Whille Levi does not see to have the same problem with the open-ended nature of the ending as some fans did, perhaps that’s because Levi himself is pretty confident about what that ending means.
“I understand why people thought ‘We invested five years in this relationship and now we’re not sure,’ but Chuck was a hopeful show,” Levi added. “I personally think the kiss worked, and if it didn’t then screw that.”
Screw that indeed…!
