The Phoenix force is perhaps the most powerful entity in the entire Marvel universe, even when compared to characters like Galactus, Thanos, and Silver Surfer. That makes the power quite coveted, and now a new host has grabbed hold of it, but it's not any member of the usual subjects.
Spoilers incoming for Thanos #6, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.
Thanos' son Thane has been journeying with Lady Death, Starfox, Nebula, and Tryco Slatterus to find a powerful item, which is under the thumb of Terrax. That search comes to a conclusion in Thanos #6, and through a series of events results in a new host for the powerful force. That host is none other than Thane himself, and he plans to use it to finally take down his father Thanos.
For those who haven't been following, here's how it happened. Thane and Lady Death take the team to find an artifact, which is eventually discovered to be a Phoenix Egg, the form the Phoenix force takes after being destroyed. It is all about rebirth after all.
The team finds the egg in Terrax's compound, but once the team finds out Thane's plan all along was to use it on himself, Nebula shoots and kills him. As the team is confronted by Terrax's forces, who have been unsuccessful in cracking the egg open for some time, Lady Death breaks the news to them that as with anything to do with the Phoenix, rebirth is essential, and harnessing the power requires death. Thane's eyes open as he absorbs the power of the Phoenix, and the first thing he does after being imbued with his new abilities is head to Thanos' headquarters, laying it to waste along with his forces before the mad titan arrives.
This was Lady Death's plan all along, and now with his new power, she has a champion that she can reign alongside. It will be interesting to see how long he keeps the power though, because as Jean Grey and the X-Men have learned, the Phoenix force is a powerful and volatile thing, and can be your undoing as quickly as it raises you to the top of the food chain.
Thanos #6 is written by Jeff Lemire with art by Mike Deodato Jr. The official description can be found below, and check out the gallery for the spoilery images.
