After news broke yesterday that John Stewart was on the chopping block, and that the character's death and the changes made to the over-arching Green Lantern plot as a result were at the root of Joshua Hale Fialkov's decision to leave Green Lantern Corps and Red Lanterns, DC Comics has affirmed that the character is not marked for death. Without addressing whether he ever was intended to die, incoming Green Lantern Corps writer Robert Venditti tweeted earlier, "Lots of rumors out there. Here's the truth: Van and I have never even contemplated killing John Stewart. We have plenty of plans for John. Plans that probably wouldn't work as well if he was, you know, dead." Meanwhile, DC's Executive Director of Publicity Alex Segura tweeted, "Seeing a lot of unverified reports on this. To clarify: John Stewart is not going anywhere." By "unverified reports," of course, he means reports that haven't been officially cleared by DC. That doesn't inherently make them false, as it may simply reinforce rumors that ran later in the day, suggesting that DC had reconsidered the character's fate in response to fan outcry when the story broke.
