Earlier today, Pokemon Go shut down all its gyms in order to prepare for a massive update later this month. The new update will radically change how gyms are used in Pokemon Go, adding new gameplay options, new items, and even ways to use gyms even when you don't want to attack or defend them.

Shortly after the game shut down its gyms, players noticed that Pokemon Go also transformed some of its Poke Stops into gyms. There's seemingly no rhyme or reason to which Poke Stops have changed, but it's likely with an eye of rebalancing the ratio between Poke Stops and gyms.

After all, Pokemon Go wants everyone to have access to the new gyms, especially as they hope the new raid feature will attract even players who don't participate in the standard attack and defense of gyms.

Players who rely on certain Poke Stops for a steady stream of items shouldn't be too concerned. Once the new gyms go live, players will be able to obtain items by spinning the gym's photo disc, just as they would for Poke Stops.

There's no word on when the new Pokemon Go update goes live, but it's expected to be sometime this week. The new gyms will go live once a worldwide rollout of the new update is complete.
