With movies pouring out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at a rate of three per year now, the timeline and continuity of it all might get a little confusing. Thor: Ragnarok might just fuel that fire.
While visiting the Australian set of Ragnarok, ComicBook.com heard from executive producer Brad Winderbaum, who revealed when the movie takes place in relation to other recent released.
"It’s not like, five minutes after Ultron ends we start this movie. It’s a couple years later," Winderbaum said. "In the timeline of the MCU, things kind of happen on top of each other, especially now in Phase Three. They’re not as interlocked as they were in Phase One, you know, during Fury’s Big Week and everything. So [Thor: Ragnarok] happens maybe on top of [Captain America:] Civil War, on top of Spider-Man [Homecoming]. Somewhere in that ball park.”
Since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor has spent two years on Muspelheim, a new realm being introduced in the film which he will discover while on a journey to learn more about the Infinity Stones.
Given the cosmic setting of Thor: Ragnarok, the film will have less ties to the greater and mostly Earth-based Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, it is possible to piece together when the events of Ragnarok happen in relation to the other titles.
Avengers: Age of Ultron was set in 2015. "Two years after" puts Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. For it to happen on top of the events of both Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, either the story would have to span a couple of years time or Civil War would have to sit a bit further in the timeline than its 2016 setting many fans believe it to command. Still, Winderbaum may have been generalizing the timeline for Thor: Ragnarok, especially seeing as the statement came a year ago, following Civil War's release but more than half a year before Homecoming's.
"Without giving anything away, [Thor: Ragnarok] definitely leads nicely into [Avengers: Infinity War], as they all tend to do, but this being called Ragnarok, which everyone knows what that means, this is going to affect the larger universe," Thor star Chris Hemsworth said.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3, 2017. Advance tickets are available now wherever tickets are sold.
