Agent Carter, premiering in January, takes a unique position in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Taking place in the post-World War II era, Agent Carter is capable of telling new adventure of Agent Peggy Carter – Captain America's former love, played by Hayley Atwell – but also of fleshing out the history and mythology of the MCU.

That's a lot of potential for single, short series, and a lot of potential ground to cover. We don't know what directions Agent Carter will head in, but here are five things we hope we see from the series at some point during its seven-week run.

The History of Hydra

We've noted previously that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.has taken several cues from the comic book series Secret Warriors. Something that comic book series does is dive into the history and mythology of Hydra, expanding on it in a way that cast the terrorist organization in a whole new light. We're hoping that Agent Carter will do the same.

Granted, Hydra is, theoretically, in hiding during the post-War era, after the fall of the Red Skull, but perhaps we'll see the seeds of its resurrection, or perhaps be introduced to some of the other major leaders from its past.

The Howling Commandos

It was great to see the Howling Commandos in Captain America: The First Avenger, but part of the MCU being a little more realistic than its comic book counterpart mean that Dum Dum Dugan can't be standing side-by-side in combat in the modern era with the time-displaced Cap.

Agent Carter could give us another chance to see the Commandos in action. We saw a glimpse during the flashback scenes of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Season 2 premiere, and we don't want so much of the Commandos that it undercuts the series' "lone-female against the world" kind of setup, but we could stand to see them offer Carter some help in at least one episode.

Seeds of the Avengers

The upcoming Ant-Man film will have a flashback scene involving Agent Carter, Howard Stark, and Hank Pym. Many fans have speculated that this film may also feature Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp, and recent comments by Evangeline Lily have left some wondering if this may be the formation of a previously unheard of first team of Avengers.

If these theories end up being true, we'd like to see some of it seeded in Agent Carter. Perhaps Carter's adventures are part of what makes the government consider putting together such a team of exceptional people. Maybe we'll even get a cameo by Janet Van Dyne herself, or a young Hank Pym. Even if it came just in the final episode, as a sort of post-credits scene, it would be a nice tie-in to get people excited for the Ant-Man movie.

Spycraft

We've got plenty of action in the Marvel Universe, what the Iron Men and thunder gods running around. In order to for Agent Carter to set itself apart, it needs to do something we haven't seen much of in the Marvel Studios films so far.

Carter is put in a precarious position when Howard Stark asks her to help him track down his stolen technology, seeing as Stark has been labelled a traitor. This is where Agent Carter can really differentiate itself from what's come before, by focusing on how Carter must carefully navigate her way through a world of spies and intrigue. Hopefully we'll see this side of her story in the spotlight.

Peggy Carter Kicking Ass

Let's be honest here, Agent Carter is a character-centric a project as any of Marvel's superhero movies. The series was greenlit largely on how well-liked Hayley Atwell is as this strong female character, existing in a time when strong female characters weren't much a thing.

More than maybe anything else, we just want to Agent Peggy Character really take the spotlight, both as an emotionally relevant character, and a kickass action hero.

Agent Carter premieres January 6 on ABC.
