Matthew Vaughn Says Audiences Are Over The Dark Knight Trilogy

Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn has said that moviegoers have had enough of the grim and serious superhero films made popular by Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

While doing an interview for his latest comic book movies, Vaughn argued that the pendulum has swung away from gritty, urban dramas towards fun and outlandish adaptation that embrace their comic book roots.

"People want fun and escapism at the moment," Vaughn recently told SFX Magazine. "Look at the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think Nolan kick-started a very dark, bleak style of superhero escapism, and I think people have had enough of it."

Vaughn is an accomplished comic book movie director, helming Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and now, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Kingsman adapts Mark Millar's Icon miniseries about a covert British spy organization, not terribly unlike MI6 in the James Bond franchise. The story follows an elderly agent in the organization who must train a talented but troubled new recruit in the world of espionage.

And like in his other Mark Millar adaptation, Kick Ass, Vaughn promised that Kingsman: Secret Service would deliver plenty of humorous moments in an otherwise tame environment.

"It's not a comedy, but it's full of laughs. It's got everything. It's what we did with Kick-Ass – it's a proper movie but were allowed to have a bit of more fun with it," Vaughn said. "Its aim was to be entertaining but not silly."

Kingsmans: The Secret Service hits theaters on February 13th.
