Fox has signedThe Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct a new film based on Marvel’s The New Mutants.

The film will be a standalone expansion of Fox’s X-Men movie universe. The New Mutants comic book was the first series to spinoff from Marvel’s X-Men, and introduced a new group of student’s to Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Membership included Mirage, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Karma, Sunspot, Warlock, Magma, Cypher, and Colossus’ kid sister, Magik.
Boone will co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney, and Simon Kinbergย willย produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of theย X-Menย universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” Kinberg told Deadline.
Fox has made its intent to grow the X-Men movie franchise known by scheduling three X-Men movies for 2016: X-Men: Apocalypse, continuing the main franchise, and solo spinoffs Deadpool and Gambit. The third Wolverine movie, and the last to star Hugh Jackman, will follow in 2017.
