Johnny Depp is ready to return to horror. Deadline is reporting the actor will star in Universal's upcoming reboot of The Invisible Man, based off the original 1933 film. The Invisible Man is an adaptation of a HG Wells novel about a scientists who discovers an invisibility serum at the cost of his own sanity. The Invisible Man will be part of Universal's planned "Monsters Universe", featuring remakes of popular movies like The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Wolf Man all set in a single world.

The original Invisible Man film was part of Universal's famous line of monster movies. Directed by James Whale, who also directed Universal's hit Frankenstein movie, The Invisible Man spawned a series of sequels and launched the acting career of Claude Rains, who went on to receive four Academy Award nominations.

Depp joins a pretty impressive list of actors rumored to appear in Universal's upcoming monster movies. Tom Cruise is in talks to appear in The Mummy, Scarlett Johansson was offered the lead in Creature from the Black Lagoon and Angelina Jolie is rumored to play The Bride of Frankenstein. Universal's Dracula Untold, which was released in 2014, is also part of Universal's monster cinematic universe.

Depp's next film will be this spring's Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. No release date or director has been announced for The Invisible Man.
