The X-Men movie franchise added a surprising new star over the weekend, as Deadpool opened to record box office numbers. Not only did Deadpool bring back Ryan Reynolds to the X-Men franchise, it also established the movie as part of the larger X-Men film continuity by adding fan favorite Colossus and teen X-recruit Negasonic Teenage Warhead as key parts of the cast.

Deadpool isn’t the only X-Men film out this year, as X-Men: Apocalypse will debut later this summer.Set in the 1980s, Apocalypse will continue the “rebooted” X-Men franchise set up in X-Men: First Class and continued in X-Men: Days of Future Past.Although Days of Future Past wiped out some of the more problematic elements of the overall X-Men movie elements (including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which technically featured Deadpool’s first appearance in the movie franchise), there’s still some uncertainty about how movies set in the modern day, like Deadpool, fit into the overall movie continuity.

So that begs the question: will Deadpool somehow cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse? If Deadpool were to appear, it would probably have to be a pre-Weapon X version of the character, considering that Apocalypse is set in the 1980s and Deadpool appeared to be set in the modern day.Given that Wade Wilson’s hobby at the beginning of the film was protecting teenage girls from stalkers, there’s definitely room for a scene in which Wilson protects Jean Grey or Jubilee (two of the new X-Men in Apocalypse) from some would be enemies.

Another obvious possibility is showing Wade Wilson during one of Cerebro sequences, although Deadpool seemed to hint that Wilson wasn’t a “true” mutant and received his mutation through artificial means. In the comics, Weapon X enhanced Deadpool’s regenerative powers and it would be easy to say that Wilson was a mutant whose powers hadn’t come in yet.If Wilson is a “real” mutant, then he could easily pop up for a second or two when Professor X uses Cerebro during the film.

Speculation aside, we haven’t heard any rumors about Deadpool getting a cameo in the film.To date, we haven’t heard of Ryan Reynolds visiting the Apocalypse set or filming a scene with any X-Men cast members. However, Hugh Jackman’s cameo in First Class was added at the last minute, as was the hilarious “schwarma” scene in The Avengers.Reynolds seems very enthusiastic about more Deadpool appearances, so it he’d probably agree to a last minute cameo if producers wanted him in Apocalypse. Obviously, the producers would want to keep a Deadpool cameo under wraps to keep it a surprise for fans.

Given the success of Deadpool, it would make sense for 20th Century Fox to strike while the iron was hot and use its new hit character in Apocalypse. Not only would a Deadpool cameo keep the character fresh in the minds of fans, it would also strengthen Deadpool’s ties to the X-Men universe. Anything is possible when it comes to Deadpool and a little cameo or post credits scene would be a great tease to keep X-Men fans sated until the Deadpool sequel is officially announced.
