Pokemon GO is inching closer to release. Niantic Labs, the game developer behind Pokemon GO, announced today that field tests were officially underway in Australia and New Zealand. Testers will receive an email informing them they've been accepted into the beta group. Per a statement from Niantic, testers were selected based on their phone operating system, their gaming experience and good old fashioned luck.

Niantic previously rolled out a beta test for Pokemon GO in Japan, which gave Pokemon fans their first unofficial look at the highly anticipated augmented reality game. Thanks to the first round of beta tests, fans have a rough idea of what battling, catching and evolving Pokemon will be like in the game. Niantic has slowly added features to the game throughout the first series of beta tests, so it's possible the Australian beta test will show off even more features for the game.

Although Niantic and the Pokemon Company has yet to announce a release date for Pokemon GO, it's anticipated that it'll be released sometime this summer. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more news on Pokemon GO and other Pokemon games as it happens.
