Monopoly the Musical: that’s a thing that will actually be coming to Broadway if the new partnership between Hasbro and the Broadway production company Araca Group has their way. It’s the first project they’re developing for live theater, with others planned after its release. The partners will also look at national tours, cruise ships, amusement parks, and licensing to school and community theaters for live entertainment.

The first musical will “explore the world of Monopoly,” Matthew Rego of the Araca Group told Variety. Rego invoked the LEGO movies as inspiration for how to take a toy property and bring it to life. That probably means the show will be about a hotelier, as “Housing Market Crash: The Musical” doesn’t sound like it’d exactly be a fun Broadway romp.

Araca produced Disgraced, Wicked, and Shuffle Along on Broadway, and also does merchandising for other shows like The Book of Mormon, and helped on brand extension for the Her Universe apparel line.

“We’re expanding our franchises and building immersive experiences,” said Simon Waters, Hasbro’s general manager and SVP of entertainment and consumer products. “To bring our properties to life onstage is just the next level of immersion.”

No timeline or creators including book, music, directors, or performers have been announced or attached to the show yet, though the report does say it would be “at least three or four years away.” More of the Hasbro and Araca partnership plans should be announced soon. We can only hope this song is included.
