Who Is Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider?

AGHOST

Robbie Reyes, the most recent Ghost Rider, has been confirmed as joining the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their fourth season on ABC. If you’re wondering who Robbie Reyes is, we have you covered. Robbie is the latest in a long line of Spirits of Vengeance, trading in the Harley for a supped-up Dodge Charger. If you aren’t familiar with the Ghost Rider of the comics, then you’d probably most know him from the two Nic Cage movies: Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance. While both films had mixed receptions at best, this new Ghost Rider promises to be the shot in the arm that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs for its new season coming this fall.

Ghost Rider, as a concept, is basically the Spirit of Vengeance takes possession of a human host and enacts retribution on criminals either by killing them, beating them to a pulp, or simply burning their souls out with his penance stare. There can be numerous Ghost Riders at any given time so think Green Lantern Corps but much more demonic. Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones, and now Robbie Reyes have been the primary hellfire heroes. Robbie himself comes from the wrong side of the tracks, looking to take care of his younger, disabled brother. In an attempt to get them out of their current home and into a better one, Robbie begins street racing after finding the Charger in his auto body garage.

From here, Robbie comes into contact with a spirit named Eli, who gives him the power of the Ghost Rider. Taking out his anger and newfound powers on street gangs that tormented himself and his brother, Robbie revels in the power of the Spirit of Vengeance. He eventually comes into contact with Johnny Blaze, the first Ghost Rider, and the pair have something of a student/teacher relationship. It’s eventually revealed that “Eli” is in fact a homicidal maniac who’s simply attempting to take control of Robbie’s body using the Ghost Rider as a front. Robbie manages to take control and banish Eli but his brother is injured in the process, leaving him emotionally scarred and perhaps comatose. While Robbie’s series ended here, he has appeared numerous times in the Marvel Universe and is sure to make a return now that he’s showing up on the small screen later this year.

Robbie first appeared in the short lived series, “All New Ghost Rider” from creators Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore. While this new Ghost Rider is less experienced and much younger than those that came before him, he’s still just as flashy and has similar powers to rival them. The Spirit of Vengeance appearing on AoS was long thought to be an impossible rumor, but San Diego Comic Con has shown us that his appearance has been in the works for some time. Actor Gabriel Luna is set to bring Robbie Reyes to life and it’s sure to be one hell of ride (see what I did there?)
