Director J.J. Abrams has successfully brought numerous storied franchises to the big screen, including series like Star Wars and Star Trek, but Abrams has another beloved franchise in his sights, and it may be happening sooner rather than later.

It’s been known for some time that Abrams wanted to work on a Portal film, but there hasn’t been much movement on it other than the typical “it’s being worked on”. Abrams tipped his hat to video game fans during the premiere of his HBO show Westworld though by telling IGN that there should be new information very soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.”

The Portal series is adored within the gaming community, not just for it’s refined and addictive puzzle solving gameplay, but for its eccentric humor and quirky characters. Abrams wouldn’t share details on the proposed plot of the film, but did say that the team he’s assembled really gets what makes the franchise unique.

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

Abrams’ Westworld debuts on HBO October 2nd.
