Pacific Rim 2 is officially titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. The title was first reported about a year ago, but had not yet been confirmed. Now, star John Boyega posted a leather-bound script for the film on his personal instagram showing off the title.

He also announced it was his first day in production on the movie, the sequel to the 2013 surprise hit. The original starred Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost - a last name now shared by Boyega's character. Pacific Rim came from writer Travis Beacham and writer/director Guillermo del Toro, offering up a fresh look at the popular genres of giant robots and kaiju (giant monsters), by pitting them against each other.

First day on Pacific Rim today. Here's to a great adventure ahead ✌🏿

While both del Toro and Beacham are involved in the writing of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, and del Toro is also acting as a producer on the film, it will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight. DeKnight recently made a name for himself on several seasons of Spartacus and Daredevil, and his genre bench is deep with Dollhouse, Smallville, and Angel.

Comicbook.com recently spoke to Boyega's co-star in Maelstrom, Levi Meaden, who expressed his excitement to get started with the film.

"I'm a huge Guillermo del Toro fan, so I loved the first one. I mean, it's giant monsters fighting giant robots! You got what you expected out of it and it was a lot of fun!" Meaden told ComicBook.com. He went to the audition for the sequel, and felt like "it was crazy" after watching the first in theaters and loving it so much.

"It's a new team, a great team. We got Steven DeKnight who just did the last season of Daredevil. They're taking it in a whole new direction and there's a lot of stuff going on. I'm just excited to get out there, see the set, see what we're dealing with," he said. "It's going to be a lot of fun! I'm super excited, stoked, and kind of aghast at the whole thing!"

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom's plot is under wraps, but it is definitely a sequel, and actor Scott Eastwood is also confirmed in the cast. Due out February 23, 2018, production starting now keeps it perfectly on track for that release.
