“I love making films, and I’ve got a great team, all of whom are like family,” he explained. Yates also indicated that he didn’t feel intimidated by the number of films in his future. “I only look at it movie to movie,” he said.
Of course, Yates does have some previous experience with the Harry Potter franchise. The director helmed four of those films: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows โ Part 1, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows โ Part 2.
Earlier this year, Yates spoke with Collider about his return to the wizarding world. He said he was plugged back into the Wizarding World after Warner Bros. sent him the script for Fantastic Beasts. “Well, they sent me the script and I wasn’t certain ’cause I’d spent six years here on those four Potter films, and they sent me the script and I was really nervous ’cause I had to really fall in love with it to come back. And I didn’t know if I could come back,” he said.
Luckily, Yates fell for the story. “It was just the most delightful read. It was charming, moving, tender. It felt fresh and it was with a bunch of people that I really love working with so, it was a bit of a no-brainer.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four Harry Potter blockbusters. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incidentโฆwere it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
Warner Bros. Pictures has slated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for worldwide release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 18, 2016.
