Get ready to drift, Pacific Rim fans. The blockbuster will debut its long-awaited sequel next summer, and shooting on the project recent got underway. Director Steven S. DeKnight shared a picture from set on the film's first day of filming, and now other set photos have been spotted online. Each of the images feature John Boyega wearing some post-apocalyptic kind of gear, but the Star Wars actor still manages to look rugged.

The Daily Telegraph (AU) posted several photos of Boyega filming Pacific Rim: Maelstrom to their website, and fans are clamoring over the actor's appearance. The sequel is currently filming in Australia, specifically in Cronulla. The locale is the second shooting location in Australia as Pacific Rim kicked off production in Queensland last month.

Looking at the photos, fans can see Boyega dressed haphazardly in worn jeans, black boats, and layered jackets. His coiffed hair contrasts with his rattier clothes, but hey - a guy's got keep some sort of hygiene even if the world is ending. His ensemble suits the setting featured in the set photos. Fans can see that the Pacific Rim set is in shambles with crumbled building remains scattered about. The area looks like it's been through war, a fact that does not bode well for humanity following the original Pacific Rim film.

In the first movie, fans learned that the monstrous kaijus attacking Earth were coming from a portal far underneath the sea. Pacific Rim followed two mismatched jaeger pilots named Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori unite to close the gaping breach, and they did succeed. However, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom may throw fans into a world wherein the fearsome creatures have returned, and it looks like Boyega's character will be the man tasked with stopping them.

So far, fans seem to be happy enough that the sequel is finally in production. The movie was announced shortly after the first Pacific Rim installment premiered, but it has had its ups-and-downs since. The second movie was expected to hit theaters next April, but Universal eventually scrapped the date and shelved the project. In February, DeKnight joined the film and ushered in Guillermo del Toro as a producer to get the film running once more.

Recently, ComicBook.com spoke with Boyega's co-star Levi Meaden who expressed his excitement about the new team. "It's a new team, a great team. We got Steven DeKnight who just did the last season of Daredevil. They're taking it in a whole new direction and there's a lot of stuff going on. I'm just excited to get out there, see the set, see what we're dealing with," he said. "It's going to be a lot of fun! I'm super excited, stoked, and kind of aghast at the whole thing!"

Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on February 23, 2018.
