Star Wars' Mark Hamill Takes Aim At Donald Trump

It looks like yet another Star Wars alum has spoken out on this year's election results. Earlier this year, screenwriters Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta made their stance against president elect Donald Trump known on social media when they altered the Rebel Alliance logo to protest his candidacy. And, now, Mark Hamill has given his opinion on the U.S. and its current political climate.

Recently, Hamill spoke to The Daily Beast about his new show Pop Culture Quest and took a moment to address his opinions about Trump's controversial rhetoric.

"I'm in total denial," he said about the president elect. "I'm glad I have [the show] to take my mind off what's going on. Because if you look at what's being assembled for our government it's like, yikes. It's a who's-who of really despicable people."

In the past weeks, news sources have directed more coverage to Donald Trump's growing cabinet selections, and some Star Wars fans had an issue with a quote by one of the nominees. Stephen Bannon was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter at a recent interview saying, "Darkness is good. Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That's power. It only helps us when they [the media] get it wrong. When they're blind to who we are and what we're doing."

The mention of Darth Vader raised several eyebrows from actors and crew members attached to the Star Wars franchise. And the comparison was apparently enough to prompt Hamill to speak out about his personal political leanings.

Talking about the election's results, Hamill said he understands how his fellow Democrats may feel. "It's tempting to say, 'Well, I'm moving to Canada, I can't stand it,'" he said. "But in other ways, it's a challenge to stay and defend your country and do what you think is right and not retreat and hide under the covers. It's not gonna be easy, that's for sure."

For now, the actor says he hopes despairing fans will look to the bright side of pop culture to help navigate coming political uncertainty.

"It sounds corny, but the Star Wars films were incredibly optimistic films," Hamill explained. "They talked about doing good just because it helps others and being selfless and understanding your place in the universe. Beyond being entertaining, I hope that's a message that kids still respond to. Because I still believe that. I still believe all those tenets of 'treat others the way you want to be treated' and so forth."

If any Star Wars fans are inclined to take Hamill's advice, then they are in luck. Sooner than later, a brand-new Star Wars film is slated to hit theaters. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters next month, and tickets for the highly anticipated film will go on sale Monday.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
