Mark Hamill Teases Ambiguity of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Title

When Star Wars: Episode VIII officially became Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many fans started wondering what exactly that title meant. Did it apply to one Jedi, or two or more? After all, it can be both singular and plural. Some people even wrote entire stories about it (ahem...) and the internet went wild with theories and reactions. Mark Hamill, who happens to be in the midst of a week of press thanks to his film Brigsby Bear at Sundance, has naturally had to answer a few questions about Star Wars, as well, and he loves that the title is one people can speculate about.

"I think it's very ambiguous," he told Uproxx in an interview at the film festival. "Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me? Is it someone we've never met before? Or is it Rey? Because she seems to have the Force as well. So we'll all wait and see."

The actor was a little surprised when he found out about the title - which he was told early in the production of the movie - because "the actual phrase is in the crawl for Episode VII" referring to the first four lines that scroll across the screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "By the way, when you read The Force Awakens script, the very first [few] words are, 'Luke Skywalker has vanished.' Ooh, baby, this is going to be good! I'm going to have a great part! But down later in the crawl, and I can't quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter this morning, 'until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.'"

Indeed, that sounds ominous for Luke Skywalker, now that the title has shifted focus, but these titles have tended to have more than one meaning in the past. Fans have debated for literal generations now over whether Return of the Jedi refers to Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi knight or to Anakin Skywalker being redeemed - returning to Jedi from Sith. So, The Last Jedi could have more than one meaning, too.
