In additional to replacing the lead actor, Doctor Who will also be replacing its showrunner as Chris Chibnall takes over for outgoing executive producer and writer Steven Moffat. A very vocal segment of the fandom is calling for the next Doctor to be a woman, but Chibnall says that fans shouldn’t get ahead of themselves.
“We’ll cast the role in the traditional way: write the script, then go and find the best person for that part in that script,” he told the Telegraph. “You couldn’t go out and cast an abstract idea.” Even so, Chibnall says that he has “a very clear sense” of what the next Doctor will be like.
“The creative possibilities are endless, but I have a very clear sense of what we’re going to do, without even knowing who’s going to play the part.”
Despite how early in the recasting process Chibnall seems to be, oddsmakers are already predicting that Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange, Snowpiercer) will play the next, thirteenth, and first female Doctor.
