New LEGO Set Hints At Big Battle In Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man is poised to take the Marvel Cinematic Universe by storm over the coming years, as evidenced by ComicBook’s rankings where it sits as the 6th Most Anticipated Film by our users.

After making a major splash in Captain America: Civil War, the ole Web-Head will next be seen in his own film before teaming up with the Avengers to take on Thanos.

But before battling in the Infinity War, he has to deal with Homecoming, and as the film barrels toward its release date new information—and merchandise—has been trickling out.

And now we might have our best look yet at a major set piece from the film, courtesy of BrickShow.

At the New York Toy Fair, box images for new LEGO sets based on Spider-Man: Homecoming were finally revealed, showcasing two sets from the film. One includes the attempted robbery shown in the trailer.

The other film hints at a major battle between Spider-Man, an (expected) ally, and the film’s main villain. However it also contains its own mystery, one that LEGO and Marvel are not be willing to reveal at this point.

But how much do these sets potentially spoil about the upcoming film ahead of its release in theaters? And how much can just be gleaned from the trailers?

ATM Heist Battle

The first set is a bit of a no-brainer, considering how heavily featured the scene was in Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s first trailer.

When a group of criminals sporting some fancy tech attempt to rob a bank, their labors are spoiled by Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man.

The two bank robbers wear Avengers Halloween masks to hide their identities, and the Captain America and Thor thieves are represented in this set.

This should be the smallest and therefore most affordable set of the line, giving a cheap introduction that includes the MCU Spider-Man minifigure that debuted in the Civil War line last year.

Unfortunately the set does not include the homemade Spidey outfit seen in other merchandise, so fans can only hope LEGO has an ace up their sleeve for that version of the character.

Also worthy of note, this 185 piece set includes a building facade of the bank. Even though it is small, it’s always great to see LEGO Super Hero sets including play features that aren’t based on vehicles. Which is especially welcome given the makeup of the set on the following slide…

Beware the Vulture

The second and last of the announced sets includes the MCU Spider-Man, a new version of his mentor Iron Man, Michael Keaton’s portrayal of the Vulture with his brick-built wings, and a mystery character.

This marks the latest edition of many Iron Man suits from the films, and one of the first to include this many silver and gray elements. While the LEGO Avengers Video Game included the amazing Silver Centurion minifigure, this is the first to be included in a set that’s based off a movie design, giving us one of our best looks at Iron Man’s latest armor to date.

Also of note is the Vulture’s mechanical wings, utilizing stud shooters and a clever use of the shield tiles that debuted in the Nexo Knights line.

But the mystery figure might be the main draw. LEGO has been known to spoil plot points of movies when promotional images of their correlating play sets are released, such as last year when the brick-built Giant Man spoiled an Ant-Man development in Civil War. This seems like they’re making an attempt to help Marvel keep their secret for just a bit longer.

Is this the minifigure debut of the Shocker, who is been heavily rumored to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming? Or is this another character altogether—perhaps a surprise that Marvel doesn’t want to reveal quite yet? Someone like Mary Jane Watson?

It also could simply be a mock of a character whose design has yet to be finalized, a less glamorous but also just as likely a reason for hiding it.

The set clocks in at 375 pieces, making it the bigger of the two.

The vehicle includes some details, including a few crates with packaging logos on them. But while most MCU-based LEGO sets have hinted at the fictional companies in the universe, like AIM or ROXXON, these crates simply read D.O.C.D. Could the label be a placeholder for something more spoilery, like Oscorp? We’ll find out this summer when the sets hit shelves.
