Sailor Uranus & Sailor Neptune
If you still think Sailor Uranus and Neptune are cousins, it’s time to think again. The U.S. import of Sailor Moon may have convinced kids the ladies were related, but their relationship is anything but platonic. The intergalactic warriors were girlfriends, and while censors didn’t want to showoff the partnership, the scouts themselves did. The tale of a childhood friend becoming something more has never been as sweet as it was in Fullmetal Alchemist. The shonen series was mainly preoccupied with the Elric Brothers and their search for the Philosopher’s Stone, but that didn’t meant romance was off the table. As the series progressed, fans learned more about the romantic undertones lingering between Edward and his friend-turned-mechanic Winry Rockbell. So, when the pipsqueak alcehmist used his theory of equivalent exchange as a pick-up line, fans were left with heart palpitations.

The romance found within Toradora is one few saw coming. Looking at Taiga and Ryuuji, you would never expect the pair to fall in love. The former looks like a doe-eyed princess while the latter comes off as a gangsters. In real life, Ryuuji is the straight-A student while Taiga struggles to keep her tsundere temper in check. So, when the two are forced to helped each other out with school, they clash in unpredictably awkward ways. However, along the way, the pair eventually learn how well they compliment each other. After all, love doesn’t have to make sense to feel right.

The hilarious mismatched pair are comedic rivals in high school who feel insecure about their flip-flopped heights. Risa feels like she towers over all her prospective crushes while Otani struggles to be noticed. The anime challenges serious social norms with a smile, and its love story is one that’ll make your cheeks hurt from laughing.
