The film is reportedly being pushed hard by Warner Bros. The studio is still searching for a director and has had preliminary talks with several directors, including Mel Gibson.

The original Suicide Squad was written and directed by David Ayer. It received mixed reactions from fans and critics, earning a 57.84 ComicBook Composite Score but a 4.06 out of 5 ComicBook User Rating, but did earn an Academy Award for its hair and makeup.

Ayer will likely be involved in the production of Suicide Squad in some former, most likely a producer, and had expressed an interest in making the sequel R-Rated. That interest may be validated by the success of the R-rated Deadpool and Logan for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movie franchise. While there’s no official word on which cast members will return for the sequel, Karen Fukuhara, and Jai Courtney expressed and interest in reprising their respective roles as Katana and Boomerang, and the studio was said to be looking for Will Smith to return as Deadshot.

Ayer is said to be in discussions with Warner Bros. to direct a spin-off Gotham City Sirens movie focused on Harley Quinn and other female villains. The studio is also said to be considering a solo movie starring Will Smith’s Deadshot.
