When Logan conceptual artist Edon Guraziu began working on cybernetic-enhancements for Donald Pierce (played by Boyd Holbrook) and his enforcers during pre-production, production designer François Audouy asked him to “design highly advanced prosthetics of surgical quality in terms of materials and aesthetic that would be 3D printed/generated” in the Reavers’ expedition trucks. However, in keeping with the film’s gritty, grounded look, director James Mangold chose to go with “more out-dated industrial looking” prosthetics.
In the end, Guraziu was “very happy” that Mangold went in that direction, believing “it fits great with the vibe and environment of the movie.” We agree!

Even so, Guraziu came up with some great designs and was kind enough to take part an interview and share a sample of his work. View his art by clicking on “Start Slideshow.“
Since Logan takes place in the somewhat near-future, did you have to be mindful about how far you pushed the Reavers’ technology?
Edon Guraziu: Definitely. I made sure to take reference from current technological advancements and push them even further wherever I felt was necessary. It was a fun challenge to take current tech and develop them in an elegant way and let the robotic elements be less invasive to the form. This method achieved the desired aesthetic of natural and familiar shapes, while also keeping strong sci-fi and mechanical elements embedded.
What was the most challenging aspect of working on Logan?
Edon Guraziu: I think the hardest thing for me was to keep the design relatable to the audience. I wanted to come up with unique visual solutions, while staying far enough back in terms of technology, to make sure the people would recognise and accept the design naturally — without having to think about it for a second.
What projects do you have coming up?
Edon Guraziu: Oh, I’m pretty busy with several cool projects! Unfortunately I can’t disclose much… What I can say is that I’m currently working at NVIDIA doing conceptual design, and next to that, I am developing new products in the weapons industry for several companies. But trust me, it’s not as scary as it sounds!
In 2029, the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins … In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are ageing, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice).
James Mangold (The Wolverine) directed, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with screenwriters Scott Frank and Michael Green.
