When NieR: Automata released earlier this year, some people didn’t know what to make of it. Sure, it looked fantastic, but it was based on a franchise that hasn’t been heard of in some time. Still, that didn’t stop the game from bewildering us – and, for that matter, its avid fans.

Square Enix confirmed on Twitter this evening that the game has managed to clear 1.5 million units sold, between physical copies and digital games sold across Steam and PlayStation 4.

“PlayStation has been exceeded for Steam action RPG NieR: Automata global cumulative shipments, download sales 1500000/ 4. For support after the sale, thank you,” the tweet roughly reads from a Japanese translation.

This comes on the heels of the announcement three months ago, when Square Enix indicated that the game had become a million seller – proving a lot of skeptics wrong when it came to the longevity of the sequel.

Of course, having Platinum Games behind the game’s development certainly doesn’t hurt, as that developer brings a serious repertoire to the creation table, as it previously worked on much-beloved classics like the Bayonetta games and Vanquish. In fact, both of those franchises were re-introduced on PC as of late, creating even more popularity for the developer.

That’s a good amount of sales for Automata, which hasn’t even been out over three months as of yet. It released on PlayStation 4 back on March 7th, and just a few days later on PC. Considering that it’s been getting some recent downloadable content (a very weird pack where you can actually battle against heads of the development team), that popularity is likely to continue, especially considering the high marks that the game has been getting.

There’s a good chance that Platinum and Square Enix aren’t done with the game yet, as more DLC could be announced as soon as next month, when the company will present its rundown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Considering its selling status, it’s definitely looking like it’ll happen.

But, for the time being, go out and experience NieR: Automata for yourself. It’s a breathtaking experience that’s well worth checking out – and the storytelling is definitely unique.

NieR: Automata is available now for PlayStation 4 and PC.
