Earlier this month, Wonder Woman was finally given the chance to show what a female-centric superhero film can do. Warner Bros. ushered the film into theaters, and the feature’s historic premiere has broken plenty of box office records. Director Patty Jenkins heralded the heroine through a timeless story which has garnered love from both fans and critics. However, if Joss Whedon had seen his Wonder Woman script hit theaters instead, the Internet may have straight-up revolted.
Back in 2007, Whedon gave his own swing at Wonder Woman when he pulled a script together for the heroine. The feature never panned out, and the director went on to oversee The Avengers for Marvel Studios. However, Whedon’s script for the DC heroine leaked last month, and netizens finally got a chance to read through the prompt. And, if social media has anything to say, it is that Whedon’s Wonder Woman vision is really awful.

You can check out some of the most visceral reactions to Whedon’s script below, but none of the responses have been great. Longtime fans of Wonder Woman are slamming the story for making Diana Prince an object of the male gaze and overly eroticizing her. Other fans have accused the film of teasing LGBTQ representation without offering any deliveries, leaving the script to queer-bait audiences.
However, it most fervent complaint comes with how the script begins. Rather than focusing on Wonder Woman, the film shifts focus to Steve Trevor and how he treads upon the paradise of Themyscira. Fans seem to overwhelmingly prefer Jenkins’ take on the series as her Wonder Woman film starts with a young Diana as she pretends to train along her home’s revered warriors.

If Wonder Woman taught us anything it’s that a woman should be writing and directing Batgirl not Joss Whedon
