Will Sony Or Disney Get The Box Office Cut For Spider-Man: Homecoming?

While Disney does have a vested interested Spider-Man: Homecoming perform at the box office, it isn’t for the reason you might think.

When Sony and Marvel Studios made the deal to bring Spidey to the MCU, Sony paid Disney an upfront producers fee, but Disney does not get any of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s box office tallies (via CBR).

That’s good news for Sony, as Homecoming is poised to do quite well in theaters, and will help launch their own corner of the Marvel Universe utilizing characters like Venom, Black Cat, and Silver Sable.

So what about Marvel then? Well, Disney already locked up the merchandising rights for Spider-Man back in 2011, and they kept those in the new deal with Sony as well. They hope all of the interest Homecoming generates will benefit them in the toy aisle, and it most likely will.

Not only that, but it also gives the character new life, allowing Disney to benefit from his inclusion in future movies, like Avengers: Infinity War.

So in essence, it’s good news all around.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). The cast includes Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, JacobBatalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, and Hannibal Buress.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecominglands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
